Bringing Your Pet to Your Photography Session

Bringing Your Pet to Your Photography Session
Pets are family, and they deserve to be included in your photographs too. Whether you are planning a family, senior, maternity, or couples session, bringing your pet can add personality and make your images even more meaningful.
Photographing pets does require a little extra preparation. They may be excited by the new location, distracted by unfamiliar smells, or unsure of the camera. Planning ahead will help keep your pet safe and make the session more enjoyable for everyone.
Talk to Me Before Bringing Your Pet
Please let me know before your session if you would like to bring a pet.
Not every photography location allows animals, and some locations may not be safe or comfortable for them. Once I know your pet will be joining us, I can help choose a pet-friendly location with enough space and fewer distractions.
It is also helpful for me to know:
What kind of pet you are bringing
Your pet’s size and age
How your pet behaves around strangers
Whether your pet is comfortable around children
How your pet reacts to other animals
Whether your pet has any anxiety, health concerns, or mobility needs
Whether your pet can safely be off-leash
Please be honest about your pet’s temperament. This is not about judging your pet. It helps me plan a session that keeps your family, your pet, and everyone nearby safe.
Bring Someone to Help
One of the best things you can do is bring a trusted person specifically to help with your pet.
This person should be someone your pet knows and feels comfortable with. They can hold the leash, use treats or toys to get your pet’s attention, and take your pet for a short walk when we photograph your family without them.
Trying to pose, watch children, smile for the camera, and manage an excited pet at the same time can become stressful. Having an extra person allows you to relax and enjoy your session.
Your helper does not need to be included in the photographs. Their main job is to keep your pet comfortable and safely occupied when they are not needed.
Do Not Leave Your Pet in the Vehicle
I do not recommend leaving your pet inside your vehicle while we take pictures without them.
Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can change quickly, even when the weather outside does not feel extremely hot. Leaving the windows cracked is not enough to guarantee that your pet will remain safe or comfortable.
Cold weather can also create risks, and an anxious pet may become distressed or damage the inside of the vehicle when left alone in an unfamiliar location.
Instead, bring a trusted helper who can walk your pet, sit with them in a shaded area, or safely take them home after their portion of the session is finished.
Your pet’s safety should always come before convenience.
Exercise Your Pet Before the Session
If your pet is healthy enough for exercise, take them for a walk or allow them some playtime before arriving.
A little activity can help release extra energy and make it easier for them to settle during the session. However, avoid exhausting them, especially during hot weather or if they are older.
Give them time to use the bathroom before we begin. Please also bring waste bags and clean up after your pet at the location.
Bring Treats and Favorite Toys
Treats are one of the easiest ways to get your pet’s attention and reward them for sitting or looking toward the camera.
Bring small treats that your pet can eat quickly. Large treats or anything that requires a lot of chewing can interrupt the session and may leave crumbs or drool around their mouth.
A favorite squeaky toy can also help us get those ears up and eyes looking in the right direction. Bring something that reliably gets your pet’s attention, but keep it out of sight until we need it. If they see it too early, they may become too focused on the toy.
If your pet has food allergies or follows a special diet, bring treats that you know are safe for them.
Choose the Right Collar and Leash
Bring a secure collar, harness, and leash that fit your pet properly. Even a well-trained animal can become distracted or frightened in a new environment.
Check the collar or harness before the session to make sure it is not too loose and cannot slip over your pet’s head.
If possible, choose a simple leash and collar in a neutral color that will not distract from your photographs. Avoid retractable leashes because they can be harder to control and may appear bulky in the images. I will do my best to Photoshop the leash out in your images.
Please do not remove the leash unless we have discussed it and the location safely allows it. We can still create beautiful images while keeping your pet secure.
Grooming and Final Preparations
You do not need to schedule professional grooming unless you want to, but a few simple preparations can help your pet look their best.
Before the session:
Brush their coat
Clean around their eyes
Wipe their paws
Check their collar or harness
Trim nails if needed
Remove old or distracting tags if it is safe to do so
Pack water and a portable bowl
Bring a towel for wet or muddy paws
Try not to introduce an unfamiliar haircut, accessory, or outfit immediately before the session. Your pet should feel comfortable and still look like themselves.
Keep Expectations Realistic
Pets do not understand that we are trying to create the perfect photograph. They may look away, become distracted, sniff everything, or decide they are finished.
That is completely normal.
We will work quickly and use treats, toys, sounds, and movement to encourage their attention. Sometimes the best photographs happen when we stop expecting perfection and allow your pet’s personality to come through.
Your dog may give kisses instead of looking at the camera. Your pet may lean against their favorite person or make everyone laugh. Those unplanned moments often become the images families love most.
Consider Photographing Your Pet First
In many sessions, it works best to include the pet at the beginning. Everyone is still fresh, and your pet has not had time to become tired or overstimulated.
Once we have the photographs involving your pet, your trusted helper can take them for a walk or safely take them home. We can then continue with the rest of your family pictures without worrying about where your pet will stay.
The exact order will depend on the location, lighting, and your pet’s needs, so we will discuss the best plan beforehand.
Pets Make the Memories More Complete
Pets are part of our everyday routines, celebrations, and family stories. Sadly, their time with us never feels long enough. Including them in professional photographs gives you something meaningful to hold onto as the years pass.
With a pet-friendly location, a trusted helper, treats, favorite toys, and a little patience, we can create a session that feels comfortable and fun.
If you would like to include your pet, tell me while we are planning your session. Share anything I should know about their personality, and together we will create a safe plan that includes every member of your family.
