Family photographs are more than something to post online. They document how your family grows, how your children change, and what this season of life felt like.

If you want to schedule family photos every year, consider making them part of your regular household budget instead of treating them as an unexpected expense.

Decide How Often You Want Family Photos

Start by deciding how often you would like to update your family photographs. Some families schedule a full session every year, while others plan one every two years and book smaller milestone sessions in between.

There is no right answer. The important thing is to make a plan so another year does not pass before you realize how much everyone has changed.

Break the Cost Into Smaller Amounts

Once you know approximately how much your session will cost, divide that amount by the number of months until you plan to book.

For example, if your family session costs $350 and you plan a year ahead, saving about $30 per month will cover the session. That may feel much more manageable than paying the entire amount without preparing for it.

You could create a separate savings envelope or account specifically for family photographs. Even small choices, such as skipping a coffee or takeout meal a few times each month, can help you build your photography fund without making a major change to your lifestyle.

Remember the Additional Expenses

The session itself may not be your only expense. Depending on your preferences, you may also want to include money in your budget for:

Depending on your photographer’s pricing, your family may be able to divide the session cost between multiple households. For example, if three adult siblings want photographs with their parents and children, they may each contribute toward the total cost instead of one person paying for everything.

An extended-family session can give you a variety of important combinations, including:

• The entire extended family

• Grandparents with all of their grandchildren

• Grandparents with their adult children

• Each individual household

• Adult siblings together

• Cousins together

• Each parent with their children

• Couples within the family

These photographs can become especially meaningful as families grow and change. They also make wonderful gifts for parents and grandparents.

However, it is important to understand the trade-off. When a session includes several households and many different groupings, more of the session time must be spent organizing people and capturing the requested combinations.

This usually leaves less time for personalized ideas, multiple locations, individual activities, outfit changes, or the relaxed candid moments you might receive during a session focused only on your immediate family.

An extended-family session is a wonderful option when your main goal is documenting everyone together and sharing the expense. If your priority is creating a more personalized experience based on your children’s interests, your family’s personality, or a specific creative idea, an individual family session may be the better choice.

You might even alternate between the two. Schedule an extended-family session one year and a more personalized session for your immediate family the next.

We regularly budget for meals out, coffee, entertainment, clothing, and other things we enjoy. Family photography can also have a place in that budget because its value continues long after the money is spent.

Your children will not stay this little forever. Their missing teeth, tiny hands, favorite expressions, and unique personalities will continue to change.
